Search Position Basics
search position so each search engine result page or SERP page has many ad positions available you can see some examples here the top one there is ad position one the bot the next one is ad position 2 ad position 3 and ad position 4 you can see the top 4 results on search in in Bing I’m Bing calm are all ads so your ads are being shown above even the normal results and the other thing is there there are other ad spots distributed throughout the page so not all of them are at the top and in my experience obsessing about which ad position you’re in is not really worth your time but it can be crucial and I know that for some advanced AD people it’s a big deal but if you’re starting out if you’re watching this then it’s probably not that big of a deal not to worry about but it’s still good to understand this is literally where your ad is going to be shown in one of these positions and there are more positions as well so there’s four here and then I think there was maybe two or three down at the bottom there used to be some on the side there now no longer doing some on the side but this is how Bing refers to ad positions so these are the positions the top one second one third fourth and you can see there imagine over millions of millions and millions of people every single day reloading these webpages there are tons of positions that are up for grabs so how is your position determined well as we’ve said many times and I’ll explain better in another video it’s part of an auction that means your bidding along with other people from all over the world to have to have one of those ad positions when someone loads a webpage another thing that determines so you so your bid is one thing that determines how high up on in the search positions you’re going to get an ad obviously if you’re further down you know it’s probably less likely that people are gonna see your ad but that always isn’t always true it’s kind of more of an advanced thing that we’ll talk about later but basically your bid the higher your bid the higher up you’re going to be as a general rule the other thing is a quality score we’ll talk about that in another video so where can I see my position well there’s in your Bing ads dashboard there’s a an average position metric that you can see right here so you can see in this example it shows the average position for a lot of different keywords for your ad being shown so on average overall you can see the the bolded number at the top that’s like an aggregate average for all of the keywords in this group the overall average position is three point nine five that means on average these ads are being shown at about the fourth position so the fourth the top or the bottom of the top basically that means that sometimes it’s being shown on you know further down sometimes it’s being shown at the top they’re always testing their platform they’re always testing out different things it’s not an absolute you know one person gets to own the top spot if they’re always testing things constantly it’s an algorithm it’s all automated and their goal is to make the most money and to serve their users the best and also to serve their advertisers they kind of mix those three goals we’ll talk about so that’s where you can see your your position that you’re getting with your ads and don’t worry about it too much some people obsess about this I don’t put much too much time into it but it is good to know and it can help you troubleshoot things later but that’s how that’s how you know where your average position is
