Amongst the many features that early versions of WordPress lacked was a true full-screen search function. This could be easily added with a few lines of code however it didn’t make it into WordPress until version 4.5. Thankfully, if you’re running an older version of WordPress, there’s a very simple way to add a full-screen search overlay to your website without having to mess around with any code. All you need is a plugin called Overlay Search. Once you’ve installed and activated the plugin, head over to the Overlay Search settings page to configure the plugin. The first option you need to select is the content type that you want to be searchable. You can choose from posts, pages, media, or a combination of all three. For the next option, you need to choose whether you want the search to be triggered by clicking on a search icon or by pressing the ‘/’ key on your keyboard. If you choose the latter, you can also specify whether you want the search to be triggered on keypress or keydown. The next two options deal with the search form itself. The first allows you to choose whether you want the search form to be displayed in the center of the screen or off to the side. The second allows you to choose the width of the search form. Finally, you can specify whether you want the results to be displayed in a lightbox or in a full-screen overlay. If you choose the latter, you can also specify the width of the overlay. Once you’ve saved your changes, you can test out the search by heading to your website and either clicking on the search icon or pressing the ‘/’ key on your keyboard. If you’ve configured everything correctly, you should see a search form appear in a full-screen overlay. If you’re running a newer version of WordPress, you don’t need to use a plugin to add a full-screen search overlay to your website. WordPress 4.5 introduced a new feature called inline linking that allows you to add a full-screen search form to any post or page on your website. To add an inline link, all you need to do is highlight the text you want to link and click on the link icon in the WordPress editor. This will bring up a popup where you can enter the URL you want to link to. In the URL field, enter #search and then click on the Add Link button. Once you’ve added the inline link, you can test it out by heading to the post or page on your website and clicking on the linked text. This should bring up a full-screen search overlay.
