Does It Take Talent?

Auto-generated transcript

all right let’s talk about skill or talent the so called talent myth this is one of my favorite topics to talk about in psychology and let’s talk about it specifically for you know paid traffic imagine that does pay traffic do you think require a skill or talent you think there are certain people who are more adept at the skill sets for buying and selling things online with paid ads well in my experience it definitely does not require any particular natural abilities in fact most things in my experience don’t actually require much natural skill or ability but instead the things that we’ve already talked about the higher goals the commitment and the persistence when I first got started buying ads I was completely overwhelmed I knew I had done one thing or two things right actually well three things all three of the previous things I had just mentioned I did correctly which is I set a much higher goal for myself instead of you know being an employee who makes a decent living or whatever I decided that I wanted to learn paid traffic I wanted to be a media buyer which means you pay you buy really big amounts of ads and I quickly started running into some of my own limiting beliefs because I thought that I wasn’t smart enough I saw all these people you know at conferences marketing things that I went to and I always had this sort of reverence for people who were media buyers or paid traffic people because you know long story but they seemed to be very well respected people in the marketing community and they also seemed to for the most part be very I would say intellectual very you know smart cookies and I quickly started pairing myself to them and thought I’m not I’m not it’s smarter these people these are a lot of times they were like engineer types you know they were good at programming or they had like a really systematic thinking even my first mentor was very different in personality than me he was very very good at math I thought you’d had to be really good at math turns out none of those things are true you are plenty smart enough there are people who are guaranteed less intelligent than you who are making a ton of money doing this they’re very good at it and they don’t need to be all that smart it’s just once you learn a couple of buttons to click and a couple of guidelines then you’re just as capable anybody’s just as capable you’re probably smarter than me too I mean it doesn’t intelligence doesn’t mean anything in this it’s just the skillset you know it’s just something that anybody can learn and improve so don’t worry about natural skill or talent don’t worry about whether you’re smart enough or you’re you know good enough with numbers that was another thing that I was I was worried about I thought there was something special about successful people as well they must be a math whiz I mean it always came back to that because I’m terrible at math and I of course my mind thought well then what no wonder they’re successful they’re really good at math which is so silly I’m still not good at math but that’s totally fine also a lot of people you know talk about being a good copywriter getting being good at sales and I always grew up thinking I don’t want to be a salesperson I don’t want to sell things you know copywriting is a little better because it’s writing it’s a little easier for me when I don’t have to think about seeing a person or talking to them in person but still I don’t you know I’m not a salesperson is what I thought so I thought these people were successful because they were a copywriting genius they had some sort of natural innate ability to sell you know the truth is this is a tangible skill that you can always improve that no matter who you are on this planet there’s somebody who knows something about this that you don’t and you could do well to learn from them and this is true of skill the talent myth is that you know we way over emphasized the natural talent of people when we look at their accomplishments when really every single person who is successful has behind them a long trail of trials attempts failures mentors that help them resources that they found access to somehow and you know this is just a skill like any other that you can always improve it and when I say this I mean a lot of things marketing sales advertising you know pay-per-click all this stuff they’re just they’re just little skill sets there are people in the world that are very good at them you can become one of those people all you have to do is learn what they know and you will be that on the exact same level the other thing that obviously is important to any skill development is practice and so if you practice and then learn from what happens you know learn from the results you have the courage to fail and not quit you know going back to persistence and then if you learn again after the failure and you improve you actually take that data and say okay well that didn’t work as well as I thought it would I wonder what could go wrong instead of saying I knew that wouldn’t work it’s because of this this this and this you know finding reasons and flaws in yourself or in the system or in some outside force is not helpful what’s more helpful is to learn from what happened improve and try it again you know take action come back be persistent come back to the path and just give it another shot try it again with your new and improved knowledge having tried something that didn’t work so that right there is the success formula that you need for this and pretty much any other skill in life talent way overrated don’t worry about it you are just as capable as I am or as anyone else is that learning any of this stuff I started you know being almost math it and terrible with numbers and now you know I have almost an intuitive sense of bids and clicks and all these things literally things I had to like write down and study when I first started because I couldn’t even remember the words and I was so frustrated so if you feel any amount of that frustration ever just don’t worry about it you’re doing exactly what you should be doing you’re working on the skill you’re learning you’re improving every single day and that’s all you need
