Are you planning to move your website from Weebly to WordPress? That’s great! WordPress is the most popular website builder in the world and it powers 34% of all websites on the internet.
It’s important to note that Weebly is a drag and drop website builder while WordPress is a content management system (CMS). WordPress is more flexible and scalable than Weebly, which is why many users eventually make the switch.
In this article, we’ll show you how to properly move from Weebly to WordPress (step by step).
Before we begin, we want to mention that you will need a self-hosted WordPress.org site to follow this tutorial. WordPress.com is a different platform and it doesn’t allow you to install third-party themes or plugins.
Now let’s get started!
Step 1: Choose a WordPress Hosting Provider
The first thing you need to do is choose a WordPress hosting provider. We recommend using Bluehost because they are one of the largest hosting companies in the world and they are an official WordPress.org partner.
They offer a free domain name, free SSL certificate, and one-click WordPress installation. Plus, they’re offering our readers an exclusive 60% discount on WordPress hosting.
Once you’ve chosen a hosting provider, sign up for an account and then log into your hosting account.
Step 2: Pick a WordPress Theme
Now it’s time to choose a WordPress theme. Your theme will determine the design and layout of your website.
There are thousands of both free and paid WordPress themes available. We recommend using a theme from MyThemeShop because they offer high-quality themes that are coded well and are optimized for speed.
Once you’ve found a theme you like, go ahead and download it.
Step 3: Install WordPress on Your Domain
Next, you need to install WordPress on your domain. If you’re using Bluehost, then you can easily install WordPress through their control panel with just a few clicks.
Once WordPress is installed, you’ll be able to login to your WordPress site at www.yourdomain.com/wp-admin.
Step 4: Import Your Weebly Content
Now it’s time to import your content from Weebly to WordPress. WordPress has an importer tool that makes this process super easy.
First, you need to export your Weebly content as an XML file. To do that, login to your Weebly account and go to Settings » General.
Under the Download button, you’ll see an option to Export to XML. click on that and your Weebly content will be downloaded as an XML file.
Next, login to your WordPress site and go to Tools » Import. On the next screen, you’ll see an option to import from Wix, click on that.
Now, you’ll need to upload the XML file that you downloaded from Weebly. After uploading the file, click on the ‘Upload file and import’ button.
On the next screen, you’ll need to assign authors to your imported Weebly posts and pages. For that, you can either create new WordPress users or map existing users to the imported content.
Weebly also allows you to Export your site’s media files. To download your Weebly images, login to your Weebly account and go to Settings.
