3 Bizarre Books Everyone Marketer Should Read

Over the past 15 years in digital marketing, I have read a LOT of books on just about every subject in marketing.

  • One book is basically a PHD in marketing.
  • One book written from prison from one of the greatest copywriters.
  • One book is hard to find and pricey but every great copywriter has it.

There are a lot of good ones, a lot of mediocre ones, and some amazing ones that will change how you think.

I encourage you to give these 3 amazing ones a read.

They’re well worth the time.


Book #1: Expert Secrets – Russel Brunson

If you read one book on marketing, make it this one.

The title is a bit misleading. Though, as we grow more into the “creator economy” Russel Brunson’s message in Expert Secrets rings more and more true.

And here’s why you should start with it:

  • It outlines the root of why people make buying decisions
  • It outlines literally how every sales mechanism ever works
  • It helps to reframe “selling” into “storytelling” – but with a structure that makes it easier to understand and do.

It’s like taking getting a PHD in marketing. Reread it yearly.


Book #2: Breakthrough Advertising – Eugene Schwartz

This book was recommended to me by one of my copywriting mentors who has generated many millions in sales with his sales letters.

Here’s why I think you’ll love it:

  • It’s kind of hard to find, and expensive – but every copywriter worth his salt finds a way to put it on their bookshelf.
  • It’s got the distilled wisdom of one of the pioneers of Madison Avenue advertising in it’s “glory days”
  • It explains not just how to write great ads – but how to understand human psychology in the individual, and in society at large.

Book #3: The Boron Letters – Gary Halbert

Finally, I think everyone should read this book written by guy in prison.

It feels like he is atoning for his sins…

By writing the best book on marketing, sales, copywriting business and persuasion he could possibly gift his son, and the world.

Gary Halbert was one of the greatest copywriters and direct mail salesmen to ever live. But he also had a “wild side”. And one of his “wilder” choices landed him in Boron Federal Prison.

With his time there, he decided to write letters to his son sharing his best lessons.

Talk about have constraints on your writing!

There is incredible wisdom in his lessons, and reading the tone of a man atoning for his sins by way of sharing his best lessons with his son.
